Performing Arts Curriculum Intent

At The Kingsway School, we believe the study of Performing Arts is important because developing practical skills in Music, Drama and Dance enables students of all abilities, social and cultural backgrounds the opportunity to develop and spark a lifelong interest and enjoyment in music, drama, and dance. We believe that the Performing Arts holds important academic disciplines in the study of composers, choreographers and practitioners. 

The foundations of Performing Arts are built on a fundamental understanding of creating/composing, performing and responding to each discipline. Studentens will then apply their practical skills and an awareness of the performing arts are the fundamental knowledge that students in music, drama, and dance are required to gain, as well as acquire theoretical aspects through key terminology, styles, texts and compositions. This is done to foster creativity via the investigation of many art forms. The next step is for learners to practically use this information in all three disciplines by demonstrating a high level of performing abilities, taking the audience's perspective into account, and incorporating theatrical conventions.

Our Performing Arts curriculum is aspirational because it offers a broad and ambitious curriculum that engages and inspires students through our enthusiasm and passion for our subjects, exploring all forms from a variety of styles such as naturalism, to surrealism, from musical theatre to minimalism. Cultures, and traditions are explored such as Medieval dance, the Blues and Greek theatre in order to broaden students' experiences and promote mutual respect. As part of the Performing Arts curriculum, learners are provided with a range of high-quality academic texts creating and inspiring students with the aim of exploring culture and diversity in line with our school community. In addition, students are provided opportunities for in-depth study of themes such as the social and historical background of the performing arts. Furthermore, subjects covered include Greek theatre, online safety, criminality, the legal system, the Blues, Cultural dance, Musical theatre, Film music, Notation, Chords, Riffs and Ostinatos. 

We encourage students' curiosity by providing a wide range of extracurricular activities that allow them to interact with others while also developing their artistic abilities and talents.

The Performing Arts curriculum helps our students get a better awareness of the world around them by providing numerous chances for debate about issues such as inclusivity, diversity, conflict, society, and history. As a result, students become confident, self-sufficient, resilient, well-rounded, and ambitious young adults.

We also encourage students to be sensitive and put health and safety at the heart of their work, in an inclusive environment. Students are taught about the effective use of space and how to apply techniques accurately to keep one another safe where they can grow and develop as individuals.

Our Performing Arts curriculum is inclusive and celebrates differences through our study of practitioners, play-writes, choreographers and musicians. 

Beyond our classrooms, we provide meaningful enrichment opportunities such as the whole school musical, theatre visits, practitioner workshops, LAMDA examinations and vocal and music groups designed to enlighten and inspire.

Fundamentally, the study of performing arts at The Kingsway School will, at its core, empower our students to make meaningful contributions to society by developing their character in the areas of compassion, respect, integrity, and positive relationships as well as language and communication, creativity, confidence, resilience, and independence. Our goal is for the pupils to become well-rounded people.
