Art Curriculum Intent

At TKS, we believe the study of Art is essential to equipping students with the skills needed to engage in, explore and appreciate the world around them. The foundations of Art are built on the fundamental understanding that the creative process of observation, investigation, experimentation and exploration of ideas all contribute to the creative journey which enables students to confidently express themselves through the production of their own personalised and creative works of art.

The core knowledge that learners are expected to acquire in the Art curriculum is a solid understanding of the principles of drawing, painting, printing, mixed media and sculpture and a deep understanding of the work of relevant artists, designers, architects, Art Movements and Cultures. Learners are expected to apply this knowledge through the recording of their own observations, artist research and experiments leading to the creation of their own creative works of art.

The Art curriculum is carefully structured to build on student’s foundational knowledge and understanding of the core skills and formal elements, building up the range of materials and techniques each year to create an aspirational curriculum. Students build on their prior knowledge and skills across key stage 3 and into key stage 4 to ensure that they are given the opportunity to expand and increase their proficiency in the handling of a wide range of creative disciplines. Each project is thoughtfully built around the work of relevant artists, designers, architects, Art Movements or Cultures, nurturing students’ curiosity as they investigate the ideas and meanings of different periods, styles and major art movements from history up to the present day to develop a deep understanding of the world around them and encourage rich discussion of their own work and the work of others.

As part of the Art curriculum, learners are provided with a range of high quality academic texts which explore the history of art and the creative industries, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking and rich discussion. Students are encouraged to build on their use of subject specific vocabulary when making reasoned judgements and discussing or writing about their own work and the work of others.

Beyond our classrooms, we provide meaningful enrichment opportunities such as workshops with a visiting artist and art clubs in which students can develop their own personal interest in particular styles and genres of art, fostering our students personal growth, creativity and love of art.

Fundamentally, the study of Art at The Kingsway School will encourage our students to be inclusive, compassionate and confident young people, equipping them with essential transferable skills and a committed, mature approach to their learning which fosters independence, creativity and individuality.
