Duke of Edinburgh Award

Having completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, our Year 11 students are taking on new challenges to achieve their Silver Award. To complete their volunteering section, they are undertaking a variety of endeavours including:

Designing and making Seasonal decorations for the Oxfam shop in Sale
This year, students are making a variety of colourful decorations for the Oxfam window displays at key points in the calendar ie. Easter, Mother’s Day, Autumn and Winter.

Volunteer work at the Chelwood Plus Food Bank in Cheadle Hulme
Year 11 Students are working hard at this Foodbank, making up food parcels and labelling stock. The students are now able to work under their own initiative and are developing social skills alongside organisational and mathematics skills.
They have also collected donations in school for the Charity.

Volunteer work at The Shaw Trust Charity shop in Handforth
Students have been working at The Shaw Trust Charity Shop in Handforth for almost a year. They help at the shop in a variety of ways: - sorting stock, pricing stock and arranging displays. It is a busy outlet and the students are learning a variety of retail skills and soft skills, and obtaining some valuable work experience.

Volunteer Work with Wythenshawe Hospital
The students are making cosy hand muffs and ‘twiddle’ blankets for dementia patients at Wythenshawe Hospital. These simple aids, are effective in minimising agitation and calming patients. Our students also plan to knit hats for use in the premature baby unit.

Real Food Wythenshawe
From Spring 2018, The Resource Centre aim to start work in the Wythenshawe Park walled garden, helping to restore the historic walled garden back into production. Real Food Wythenshawe co-ordinate this group effort, offering advice, support and resources as available. The school has a large plot where we will be able to grow flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables.
