Powerful Knowledge

Powerful knowledge in Design & Technology is, at its core, creativity and imagination. It is learning to design and make products that solve genuine, relevant problems within different contexts, whilst considering the needs, wants and values of others.

Curriculum Intent

Design and Technology involves applying knowledge and skills when designing and making products. The activities undertaken will enable our children to consider the needs of individuals and society. Undertaking design and technology activities in school will give our children opportunities to use a range of materials and processes and to work independently or as part of a team. We would hope that the activities undertaken here at The Kingsway School will also reflect the children's career opportunities and support them in the wider world.

Our schemes of work are ambitious and consider National Curriculum requirements for Design and Technology:

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values, whilst considering their responsibility as as designer for environmental and sustainability issues. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

Pupils learn how to take risks and be innovative. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life in the wider world. Pupils should be taught to develop their design and technology capability through combining their designing and making.

We deliver a broad and rich Design and Technology curriculum at KS3, focussed on preparing students for the demands of the GCSE courses. Students study Food, Electronics, Resistant Materials, Mechanisms and Structures and Graphics. We maintain a proportione balance between practical work and theory work enabling students to develop skills as they progress. Students work on projects that enhance skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, initiative, teamworking, resourcefulness, curiosity and imagination.
